SOME PRAYERS COMMONLY ASSOCIATED WITH THE ROSARY
---------------------------------------
OUR FATHER

Our Father, Who art in Heaven, Hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done, on earth, as it is in heaven. Give us this day, our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen
~ From Matthew 6:9-13
---------------------------------------
HAIL MARY

Hail Mary, full of grace. The Lord is with you.
~ From Luke 1:28
Blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb, Jesus.
~ From Luke 1:42
Holy Mary, Mother of God, pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death.
~ Officially added in 1566
Amen

---------------------------------------
ACT OF CONTRITION
My God, I am heartily sorry for my sins with all my heart, in choosing to do wrong, and failing to do good. I have sinned against you whom I should love above all things. I firmly intend, with your help, to do penance, to sin no more and to avoid whatever leads me to sin. Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us. In His Name, my God, have mercy.
Amen

---------------------------------------
GLORY BE
Glory be to the Father, and to the Son, and to the Holy Spirit. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be, world without end.
AMEN

---------------------------------------
SIGN OF THE CROSS
In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.
Amen
---------------------------------------
FATIMA
Oh, my Jesus, forgive us our sins, save us from the fires of hell, and lead all souls to heaven, especially those in most need of your mercy.
Amen
---------------------------------------
APOSTLE'S CREED
I believe in God, the Father Almighty, Creator of heaven and earth; and in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord: Who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary; suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into heaven, is seated at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He shall come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting. Amen.
---------------------------------------
HAIL HOLY QUEEN
(Salve Regina)
Hail, holy Queen, Mother of Mercy! Our life, our sweetness, and our hope! To thee do we cry, poor banished children of Eve, to thee do we send up our sighs, mourning and weeping in this valley, of tears. Turn, then, most gracious advocate,
thine eyes of mercy toward us; and after this our exile show unto us the blessed fruit of thy womb Jesus; O clement, O loving, O sweet virgin Mary. Pray for us, O holy Mother of God that we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ. Amen.

SUMMARY of the
HISTORY of the ROSARY

The root of the rosary today lies in the Paternoster and counting of the 150 Psalms from the Old Testament, also known as the ‘Psalter of David’. Monks would recite and chant the 150 Psalms of the Bible as a part of their worship. People living near the monasteries were interested to join in with the monks’ prayers. However, people were not able to adapt to this form of prayer because the psalms were very hard to memorize and printed copies of the psalms were not readily available. As a result, it was suggested to the people outside the monastery that they recite a series of 150 “Our Father” prayers in place of the psalms.

At first, 150 little pebbles were placed inside small leather pouches to keep count. Since this method was rather troublesome, a thin rope having 50 knots on it was used instead (it was repeated three times for a total of 150 prayers).

The term rosary was originally used to define the entire 15 decades, and the smaller common 5 decade was called a corona (crown). However, through time, the term rosary was used for both the 15 and 5 decade, and now the rosary means the 5 decade, as well as the entire set of mysteries.

Over the years, both clergy and lay people began to recite the Angelic Salutation (the first part of what we now know as the Hail Mary) as a part of this devotion. The rosary, closer to today’s form, is also said to have been given to St. Dominic through a vision of the Blessed Virgin Mary in 1216. So, today’s rosary is the result of many evolutions dating back hundreds and hundreds of years.

During a Rosary as it is now known, a person meditates on the saving mysteries of our Lord’s life and the faithful witness of his mother, Mary. Although the manner in which the rosary is recited is basically the same, it can still vary some from person to person and country to country. And, while not a requirement, it remains an important prayer tool in which the faithful spend time thinking about certain stories in the life of Jesus and Mary.

Concerning misconceptions, it can be stated that at no time is this valuable tool used to worship Mary. Hopefully the explanations above clarify that this misconception is simply just not true. It is also said that it is better to go straight to God. Often missed, is the including of The Lord’s Prayer in the rosary, and its importance to it. Certainly prayer directly to God is good - and the rosary includes that. A part of what makes the rosary so special, is its unique blend of prayer and meditation (a reason why we say prayer + meditation = rosary!). Countless interventions occur even today, and the power and divine grace the rosary offers are available to everyone who is willing to give it the opportunity.
